Button, Harry S. Truman, 1948
Button, Harry S. Truman, 1948
- Description
- Harry S. Truman assumed the presidency upon the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1945 and ran for his own full term in 1948. Because “Forward with Roosevelt” had been a popular campaign slogan for FDR, this button was circulated widely to demonstrate the continuity from Roosevelt to Truman. Truman came from behind to defeat three other candidates: Thomas Dewey (Republican), Strom Thurmond (States’ Rights Democratic), and Henry Wallace (Progressive). Democrat Adlai Stevenson would adapt this slogan yet again four years later but “Forward with Stevenson” failed to propel him to victory.
