Letter 3, dated December 18, 1858, Swan River Colony, Australia
Heading from Fayal to Cape Verde Islands, Captain's parents' home. Captain asked by locals for salute; gun went off and killed ship's carpenter. Carpenter buried ashore in Catholic cemetery at Bravo. On 21 October spoke English merchantman Forest Monarch. Man overboard was saved. 3-17 October, large comet visible in NW X N horizon. Made Amsterdam Island (uninhabited) 30 Nov. Made Swan River 13 (or 17) Dec.
