Description
Computers have been used to track museum objects from at least the 1970s. In the later 1980s and early 1990s, those working in science and technology collections at the National Museum of American History used laptops like this Toshiba T1000. The computer has a white plastic case that folds up at the front to reveal a screen and keyboard. A mark below the screen reads: TOSHIBA. A disk drive is on the right side. A rotating handle fits into the bottom and can extend from the front. A label on the bottom reads: TOSHIBA T1000 SYSTEM UNIT (/) MODEL NO. PA7027U (/) DC9V (/) 1.1A (/) SERIAL NO. 01855310AA (/) TOSHIBA CORPORATION (/) TOKYO JAPAN. A tag on the back reads: PROPERTY OF (/) SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION (/) 209093.
The computer fits in a black and gray plastic and cloth carrying case.
Also in the carrying case are:
1. An AC adaptor, model PA7482U, made by Toshiba.
2. Documentation relating to the computer, including:
a. A spiral-bound booklet entitled Toshiba T1000 Portable Personal Computer User’s Manual
b. A paperback book entitled Toshiba 2.11 Operating System MS-DOS Manual
c. A pamphlet entitled Toshiba MS-DOS Operating System 2.11 Quick Reference.
All of the documents seem to date from 1987.
3. Three 3 ½ inch diskettes with software used in conjunction with the computer. These are labeled:
a. microLocalCIS (TOSHIBA)
b. WANG WP (TOSHIBA) (/) ReL 3.0 (/) PM016 PRINT DRIVERS (/) 12-19-88
c. PC-File+ 1991 copied 4/12/96 (/) Program files (/) +MicroLCIS master (/) header files (/) +Report formats (/) + Experimental header (/) files. (/) Developed by Bernie Gallagher (/) & Wayne Wakefield at NMAH.
The computer was used with DOS, in conjunction with a Wang VS minicomputer.
