Photographic History Collection: September 11th

The September 11th, 2001 Collection in the Photographic History Collection (PHC) is comprised of more than 2400 objects in a variety of formats including photographs, CD-ROM and 3-dimensional. The collection includes both accessioned and non-accessioned objects. Also included in this collection are exhibit reference photographs, a number of which were featured in the NMAH September 11th exhibit “Bearing Witness to History,” September 11, 2002-July 6, 2003.
The photographic works in the collection range from amateur snapshots to professional photographs. The World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, PA sites are represented within the collection which includes portraiture, panorama, pre-September 11th photographs of the towers, September 11th aftermath photographs, and a photograph album. The ten accessioned CD-ROMs contain over 1000 digital images, the bulk (750), of which are credited to Michael Garcia, a member of the Pentagon’s Defense Service. The 3-dimensional objects include a digital camera used by Michael Garcia to photograph the Pentagon site, the video camera used by Jules and Gedeon Naudet for their documentation of the Fire Department of New York Engine 7, Ladder 1 and the World Trade Center site, and the laptop computer used by journalist Pete Souza in Afghanistan.
Congress has designated the Smithsonian Institution the official repository for September 11th related materials. This September 11th collection in the PHC is one of many maintained by the NMAH.
