Description
Translucent plastic two-piece box. "Cavalier / KING SIZE" printed in red with image of cavalier; initials of Willis L. Dixon "WLD" printed in blue. Box can hold one cigarette pack.
In the mid-twentieth century, cigarette companies were sponsors of many state medical society meetings. The practice continued until the 1964 U.S. Surgeon General's report on the health risks of smoking and tobacco use helped put an end to the decades-long relationship between tobacco companies and the medical profession.
This Cavalier cigarette box was presented to Dr. Willis L. Dixon, possibly at a Michigan State Medical Society meeting in the 1950s or early 1960s. (See related cigarette cases, 2008.3062.01 -.03, presented to his wife, Ruth K Dixon, at the Michigan State Medical Society annual meetings in 1959, 1960, and 1963.) The "king size" Cavalier brand was introduced by the R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company in 1949.
