The “USC&GS No. 1” inscription indicates that this carriage wheel odometer was made after 1878 when the U.S. Coast Survey became the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey. The Survey Report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1891 noted that “The odometer forms on sale up to this date do not meet with commendation from the Office of the Geological Survey, and the experience of the chairman of your committee indorses the idea that there is great room for improvement in odometer forms, leaving an open field for invention with practical ideas of the adaptation of such an instrument. In its present form it must be treated very carefully as to rates of travel.”
