Keuffel & Esser boasted that their “Stadia Hand Level (Telescopic)” will be found “very useful for preliminary surveys, cross-sectioning, railroad construction work, exploration of streams for water power, etc.” The inscriptions on this example read "KEUFFEL & ESSER CO. N.Y." and "5986."
