Aluminum device designed to test the strength of hand muscles. Joseph M. Breuer, of Brooklyn, N.Y., obtained a design patent (#247,553) on the form in 1978, and assigned it to the J. A. Preston Corp. a firm that specialized in rehabilitation products. Preston gave this example to the Smithsonian in 1984. The inscriptions on the dial read “PRESTON / HAND DYNAMOMETER” and “2 POUNDS PER DIVISION” and “J. A. PRESTON CORP / NEW YORK”. A tag reads “PRESTON / J. A. PRESTON CORP. / 71 FIFTH AVENUE / NEW YORK, N.Y. 10003 / 212 Algonguin 5-8484.”
