Description
This Nate Williams basketball card is number 54 in a series of 264 manufactured by the Topps Company Inc. of New York, New York for the 1973-1974 NBA season. The front of the card features a posed picture of the Kansas City-Omaha Royals forward. The card’s reverse features a small cartoon image illustrating the factoid that “Nate is known as ‘Iron Man’,” as well as a short biographical sketch and career statistics.
Prior to 1971, college underclassmen were not allowed to enter the NBA draft. The 1971 Supreme Court case of Haywood v. NBA granted underclassman eligibility in case of economic hardship. The ruling resulted in a supplemental draft, with Williams, an underclassman at Utah State, chosen first by the Cincinnati Royals.
