Steel vaccinator with inscriptions that read “MADE BY / CODMAN & SHURTLEFF / BOSTON” and “WHITTEMORE’S / PATENT / FEB. 20, 1866.” The inventor, Amos Whittemore, was a machinist in Cambridge, Mass.
