Thongor, a "sword and sorcery" fantasy character, was created by author Lin Carter (1930-1988) for his 1966 novel "The Wizard of Lemuria." The character was featured in several successful books before appearing in Marvel Comic's anthology series "Creatures on the Loose."
"Creatures on the Loose" first appeared in 1969 under the title "Tower of Shadows," assuming its new name in 1971. A storyline featuring Thongor ran for eight issues between 1973-1974. The comic ceased publication the following year.
The barbarian hero Thongor is very similar to pulp author Robert E. Howard's "Conan," another licensed character adapted by Marvel Comics in the early 1970s. Lin Carter set his heroes adventures in the mythical lost land of Lemuria, a doomed civilization that originated in a discredited scientific theory. Lemuria remains a topic for new-age and occult research as well as a popular setting for imaginative storytelling.
