- Description
- Benjamin Pike, Jr. (1808-1864) won this silver medal in 1848. The obverse has a female figure (representing Columbia) facing left, eagle, shield, phrygian cap, cornucopia, spinning wheel, sheaf of wheat, sailing ship, and "AMERICAN INSTITUTE / NEW-YORK / R. LOVETT." The reverse has "AWARDED / to / Benjamin Pike Jr. / For an / Air Pump / 1848." The design is the work of Robert Lovett (1796-1874), a medal artist who worked in Philadelphia and New York.
