Campaign button for William Jennings Bryan, Democratic presidential candidate in 1896. The slogan “16 to 1” was part of Bryan’s free silver platform, which advocated that the United States use both gold and silver as standard at a ratio of 16 ounces of silver to 1 ounce of gold.
