Description
Glass hydrometer with shot ballast, and paper label reading “Per cents of Sugar at 60 Fahr. Balling Saccharimeter.” The scale extends from 0 to 10. There is also a stamp reading “U.S. Internal Revenue Standard Hydrometer, A7464, Series of 1909.” “U.S. / 1911” is etched onto the glass. Carl Joseph Napoleon Balling (1805-1868) was a Bohemian chemist who, in 1843, designed a saccharimeter that indicates the saccharine content of a sugar solution.
