Deer pin, carved by Tsuneyo Shimizu, Tule Lake, 1942-1945
Deer pin, carved by Tsuneyo Shimizu, Tule Lake, 1942-1945
- Description
- This wooden pin was made by June Shimizu while she was incarcerated during WWII with her sister Tsuneyo Shimizu. During their imprisonment they both picked up arts and crafts to express themselves creatively and occupy themselves during the large amounts of free time they had. They made corsages and small wooden carvings out of leftover materials, using whatever they could find. This particular wooden carving is of a deer leaping over a log, and on the log "Tsune" is written. It has an identical copy with the name "June" on it. The sisters must have made matching pins, representing their relationship and their perseverance.
