The inscription on this Burt solar compass reads "W. & L. E. Gurley, Troy, N.Y."
Justus Roe (1838-1900), of Patchogue, New York, designed and manufactured steel tapes and the associated reels. The inscription on this example reads steel tape marked: "J. ROE & Sons - Pat'd Aug. 7, 88."
