This woodcut headed “Chymie, Laboratoire et Table des Rapports” represents a chemical laboratory with two well-dressed scientists and four scruffy helpers. Below is a chart of this chemical elements as they were known in France in the second half of the eighteenth century. The image was created for the chemistry article in the Diderot, Encyclopédie. This example is from a subsequent and smaller edition.
