This regulator is presumably part of the counter-current distribution apparatus in the collection. The “The Matheson Co. / EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. / JOLIET, ILL. NEWARK, CAL.” inscription refers to a gas company begun by Adam Matheson in New Jersey in 1927.
