The “R. Fulton” inscription identifies this bust as that of Robert Fulton (1765-1815), the American engineer remembered for having developed a commercially successful steamboat. It may be the piece that the Smithsonian received from the National Institute, that was mentioned in Visitors Guide to the Smithsonian Institution and the National Museum (Washington, D.C., 1880), p. 95.
