- Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential candidate, was the first woman to be nominated for president by one of the two major political parties. Clinton won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College vote and the election to her Republican opponent Donald Trump, the fifth time this happened in US history.
