Description
This oil painting depicts Elizabeth (Eliza) Schuyler Hamilton (1757-1854) and is attributed to Daniel Huntington. The painting belonged to Graham Windham, originally known as the Orphan Asylum Society of the City of New York, for many years. Eliza Hamilton was among the women who established the Orphan Asylum Society in 1806, and she served as second directress, or vice president from its founding until 1821. From 1821, until 1848, she led the organization as first directress. The painting hung at the Graham School in Hastings-on-Hudson, New York, for decades but was rarely seen beyond the Graham School community.
