Description
Kepi-style cap worn by Henry S. Gansevoort when he served in the 7th New York National Guard before and during the American Civil War. The gray wool cap has black leather piping and a black leather visor with brass buttons, stamped "NG" in oak and palm wreath, affixed on each side of the visor. The cap has a band of black cloth around its edge and a braided loop at its back for hanging. A brass "8" insignia on the front of the cap was described by the donor as a mark that the wearer, Gansevoort, was a member of Company 8 of the 7th New York, although that designation does not appear to have existed as the 7th's companies were given alphabetic designations.
