This engraved printing plate was prepared to print a portrait image of "Charles Wilkes, U.S.N." for the publication "The Narrative of the United States Exploring Expedition, During the Years 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842," 1844, Volume 1, frontispiece. The image was produced after a portrait by Thomas Sully by R. W. Dodson.
