Skein of reeled silk filament, raised in the US; dating late 19th - early 20th century. Object tags read: "United States National Museum / 727458 / Raw silk / raised in the U.S." and "E-72748 cat no"
The US saw several attempts to establish sericulture (raising silkworms and providing cocoons to the silk textile manufacturing industry), both in colonial times and during the 19th century. The labor involved was extensive, and sriculture was never successfully established.
