Psychological Test with Answer Booklet and Directions, The Nelson-Denny Reading Test for Colleges and Senior High Schools Vocabulary and Paragraph. Form B.
- Description
- This test was coauthored by Martin Johan Nelson (1894-1970) and Emerson Charles Denny (1887-1984), both of Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). Nelson was Dean of the Faculty, while Denny was Professor of Education. It was edited by Frank L. Clapp (1877-1937), Professor of Education at the University of Wisconsin.
- Nelson had found in his M.A. dissertation, completed at Wisconsin in 1924, that scores on intelligence tests alone did not predict success in college very satisfactorily for students at that school. He recommended using scales of special interests and aptitudes, personality, and emotional characteristics as well. The test, copyrighted in 1930, sought to test the vocabulary of college and high school students. The second part tested the ability to read and understand paragraphs. These measures were designed to predict success in college, to help group college students, and to “diagnose” student difficulties.
- Materials include Form B of the test, a “Manual of Directions,” also coauthored by Nelson and Denny, and an answer sheet for Form B. This answer sheet follows the pattern of the “Clapp-Young Self-Marking Tests.” The form of the answer sheet is based on U.S. Patent 1,586,628, granted March 19, 1929.
