This test was intended to divide children entering a first grade class into two groups according to their intelligence. According to the object, it was the work of L.W. Cole and Leona E. Vincent, and published by the Bureau of Measurements and Standards of the State Normal School in Emporia, Kansas (now Emporia State University in the same location). This copy is of the fifteenth edition of the test, copyrighted by Lawrence W. Cole in 1924. It consists of tests involving such items as object recognition, discrimination of form, following directions, and tracing a maze
Ohio-born Lawrence Wooster Cole (1870-1946) attended college in southwestern Kansas and then the University of Oklahoma, graduating from the latter in 1899. He then headed the Preparatory Department at Oklahoma, taking some time off for doctoral work in psychology at Harvard University (1910). His dissertation was on the intelligence of raccoons. Cole took an appointment at the University of Colorado that year, where he established the department of psychology.
Leona E. Vincent (known also as Elizabeth Lee Vincent) lived from 1897 to 1974. Born in Colorado, she received her undergraduate (1919) and master’s (1921) degrees at the University of Colorado and served as an instructor on the faculty there from 1919 to 1922. She then did graduate work at Teachers College of Columbia University, completing her PhD. in 1924. Vincent spent twenty years in the department of psychology in the Merrill-Palmer School in Detroit before moving to Cornell University, where she became dean of the New York State College of Home Economics. She then spent some time as professor of child development at the Pennsylvania College for Women.
