Description
This collection of tests includes the Standardized Oral Reading Paragraphs (by William S. Gray) with directions for administering the test; Gates Test of Phonetic Abilities with directions for administering the test; Detroit Word Recognition Test (by Eliza F. Oglesby) with directions for administering; and the Haggerty Reading Examination for Grades 1-3 (arranged and standardized by M.E. Haggerty and Margaret E. Noonan) with directions for administering the test. The standardized Oral Reading Paragraphs provided twelve different paragraphs with vocabulary of increasing difficulty. The proctor was instructed to record any words that the students mispronounced or omitted, as well as how long it took the test-taker to read the passage. The Gates Test of Phonetic Ability is similar to the reading test but asks the test taker to rapidly read letters and combinations of phonograms. The Detroit Word Recognition Test provides a list of words and then pen and drawings in a right and left hand column. The test taker must match the word to the corresponding image. Finally, the Haggerty Reading Examination also features illustrations and directions, asking students to complete drawings and to following directions such as “draw a ring around those who make merry in the fall.” The back page lists twenty yes or no questions where the test taker must answer questions such as “Does April come before March?” and “Do girls like candy?”
Elizabeth F. Oglesby was the former assistant supervisor of reading in the Detroit Public Schools. M.E. Haggerty was at the University of Minnesota and Noonan was with the public schools of St. Louis.
