Westinghouse type 2910 DC ammeter
Westinghouse type 2910 DC ammeter
- Description (Brief)
- This ammeter consists of an instrument with a wooden glass top case mounted on a marble base. Marked: "Westinghouse Elec. & Mfg. Co., Pittsburgh, Pa. #3134". Capacity 600 amperes. In this type ammeter, a soft iron plunger (missing in this specimen) is suspended part way in a solenoid carrying the current to be measured. The plunger is suspended from a pivoted movable system carrying a pointer and controlled by gravity. The electromagnetic field of the solenoid tends to draw the plunger into the solenoid causing the pointer to move over the scale (also missing). The entire current to be measured had to be brought to the switchboard and to the instrument by means of relatively large conductors which procedure is unnecessary in modern ammeters.
