Patent model for William Ballard, “Improvement in Dentistry,” U.S. Patent 52,012 (Jan. 16, 1866). The patent illustration termed this “Cells for Dental Plates” designed “to make it relatively easy to retain the teeth in the mouth.” The patent illustration termed it “Cells for Dental Plates.”
