- A tag on the wooden box holding this cystoscope reads “A.C.M.I. / TRADE MARK / REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.” Inscriptions inside the box read “WAPPLER ELECTRIC MFG. CO., NEW YORK, U.S.A.” and “A.C.M.I. / PATENTED / TRADE MARK.” Reinhold H. Wappler (1870-1933) was born in Germany and obtained a technical education in instrument making before moving to the United States in 1890. He began his own business, Wappler & Fayer, in New York, in 1897; this became Wappler Electric Mfg. Co. in 1910. He established the American Cytoscope Co. in 1903
