Metal can with paper label reading in part “STRONGER ETHER / FOR ANAESTHESIA” and “EDWARD R. SQUIBB, M.D. / BROOKLYN, N.Y.” Edward Robinson Squibb (1819-1900) was a graduate of the Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia who served as a ship’s doctor with the U.S. Navy and then ran the medical station at the Brooklyn Naval Yard. In 1858 he started his own pharmaceutical firm.
