Glass cylinder with paper label that reads in part “KELENE / PURE CHLORIDE OF ETHYL” and “FRIES BROS., / MANUFACTURERS AND DISTRIBUTORS / OF CHEMICAL PRODUCTS / NEW YORK / WATSESSING” and “DISTRIBUTED BY MERCK & CO.” Kelene, also known as ethyl chloride, could be used as a local anestheic.
Alexander Fries & Brothers was a New York firm formed by immigrants from Bavaria that specialized in scented oils and artificial food flavorings. By 1893 the firm was trading as Fries Bros.
