- Description
- This wax model depicts squamous eczema of the hand.
- The model was made by Joseph Towne (1808-1879), who worked for over fifty years as a modeler at Guys Hospital in London. At the hospital, Towne worked with some of the leading English physicians and surgeons of the day, notably Thomas Addison, and John Hilton. Wax models depicting various skin diseases and other medical conditions were used for teaching medical students.
- This model was originally part of the Pathological Museum at the University of Pennsylvania. The collection was the largest of its kind in the United States. The Pennsylvania Collection was begun by George B. Wood (1797-1879) a Professor of Medicine at the University. Wood purchased the models in London and transported them to Philadelphia.
