Abbott Motor Company Radiator Emblem
Abbott Motor Company Radiator Emblem
- Description
- This radiator emblem belonged to an Abbott automobile manufactured by the Abbott Motor Car Company of Detroit, Michigan between 1917 and 1918. Abbott-Detroit was founded in Detroit in 1909. The company moved to Cleveland in 1917, eliminating the anachronism in their name by producing Abbott automobiles until 1918. The emblem has a white enamel background with a large red “A” in the center. The top of the emblem reads “ABBOTT MOTOR CO.” and at the bottom “DETROIT U.S.A.”
- Radiator emblems are small, colorful metal plates bearing an automobile manufacturer's name or logo that attached to the radiators grilles of early automobiles. Varying in shape and size, the emblems served as a small branding device, sometimes indicating the type of engine, place of manufacturing, or using an iconic image or catchy slogan to advertise their cars make and model. This emblem is part of the collection that was donated by Hubert G. Larson in 1964.
