This sampler by Susanna Goodale, is stitched with linen embroidery thread on a cotton ground with a thread count of warp 42, weft 36/ in. The stitches used are cross and tent. It is unusual to see the word “performed” on a sampler, mostly it is “wrought by.” The inscription is: “Performed by Susanna / Goodale Thetford August 5th.” Thetford is in Vermont.
This sampler by Charlotte Draper, dating to 1797, is stitched with silk embroidery thread on a linen ground with a thread count of warp 26, weft 28/ in. The stitches used are cross and rice. The inscription is: "Charlotte Dra / pers Sampler Wrote / In The 13 Year of her / Age June the 23 1797." Charlotte Draper was born on May 8, 1785 to Isaac (1736 – 1824) and Chloe Tingley (1746 – 1828) Draper in Attleboro, Massachusetts. She never married and died on August 22, 1848, in Thompson, Connecticut.
This sampler by Harriet Briggs, dating to 1827, is stitched with silk embroidery thread on a linen ground with a thread count of warp 23, weft 23/in. The stitches used are cross, eyelet, Algerian Eye, long-armed cross, four-sided, reverse petit point, queen, and single feather. The inscription is: “Harriet Briggs / Sampler Aged 10 Years / Lee 1827.” Harriet Thatcher Briggs was born December 15, 1816, in Lee, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts to Joshua and Abigail Thatcher Briggs. She married May 5, 1840, Enoch Comstock (1815 – 1875). They had three children. Ella , Gertrude S., and Charles Gilbert . All their children were born in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. She died August 14, 1884, in Illinois.
Alphabets, numbers, and a family record are featured on this sampler by Margaret Bedell. The sampler is stitched with silk embroidery thread on a linen ground with a thread count for the top piece warp 34, weft 38/ in and the bottom piece warp 40, weft 40/ in. The stitches used are cross, Algerian eye, and eyelet. Margaret included the inscription: "Margaret BeDeLL WaS / born the 1 DaY OF FeBrUa / ry 1763 / GILbert FOWLer WaS / BOrn OCtOber the 20 DaY / 1762 Margaret BeDell / WaS Born FeBrUarY / the 1 DaY 1763 We WaS / MarrIed OCtOber the 9 1791 / BeNJaMIN FOWler WaS / BOrN AUgUSt the 3 DAY / 1792 aNd he DeParted / thIS LIFe FebUarY / the 16 DaY 1795 / ELIZabeth FOWLer aNd / CatherINe FOWLer WaS / BOrn DeCeMber the 14 / DaY 1796 Phebe FOW/ ler WaS BOrN JULY / the 18 DaY 1799." Apparently Margaret began this sampler when she was a child and then used it to record her marriage and the birth and death of a son. Next a new piece of cloth was added to record the births of three daughters. Margaret Bedell married Gilbert Fowler on October 9, 1791.
This sampler by Mary Howard, dating to 1826, is stitched with silk embroidery thread on a linen ground with a thread count of warp 24, weft 25/ in. The stitches used are cross, and crosslet. The inscription is: "Wrought AD 1826 by Mary Howard aged nine years / Diligence and industry and proper improvement of time / are material duties of the young.” Mary Howard was born 4 February 1817, to Dr. Nathaniel and Olive Brown Howard in New Hampshire, and married July 16, 1840, Roswell Willard Turner (1815-1901) in Boston, Massachusetts. They had two children – George Francis (1846-1847) and Mary Elisabeth (1848-1849). Mary died September 5, 1889 at Dorchester, Massachusetts and is buried in Newton, Massachusetts. This sampler by Susan Roberdeau, dating to 1811, is stitched with silk embroidery thread on a linen ground with a thread count of warp 28, weft 32/ in. The stitches used are cross, herringbone, Algerian Eye, rice, marking cross, and hem. The inscription is: “Susan Robertdeaus Work/aged 10 YearS.” Also included are the initials "SSB" "ISR" "MSR" and the date 1811. Susan Shippen Roberdeau was born ca. 1802 to Lt. Col. Isaac (1763-1829) and Susan Shippen Blair (1771-1843) Roberdeau in Germantown, Pennsylvania. She died unmarried in Georgetown, DC on September 9, 1884 and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery. She lived with her sister Frances Roberdeau Buchanan after the death of her mother. See her sister Mary's sampler TE*H35625A.
