Sturdy analytical balance designed for academic and industrial laboratory work. The cabinet is aluminum with glass sides. The inscription on the ivory scale reads “VOLAND & SONS / (INC) / NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. / SARGENT / E. H. SARGENT & CO. CHICAGO.” That on a metal tag reads “VOLAND & SONS, INC. / NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. / MODEL NO. 100 / SERIAL NO M 17231 / MADE IN U.S.A.” This was manufactured by Voland & Sons, Inc., and sold by E. H. Sargent & Co. According to the donor, this balance was used at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of the Carnegie Institution of Washington.
Peter Gottfried Voland (1852-1915) was a German immigrant who arrived in Baltimore in 1871, and went to work for Becker & Sons, balance makers in New Rochelle, N.Y. In 1888 he went into business with a fellow worker, Henry Van Zelm. The firm of Voland & Van Zelm became Voland & Sons in 1903, Voland & Sons, Inc., in 1920, and Voland Corporation in 1961.
