Pencil and ink wash sketch on paper. This view of the Passerelle bridge (the furthest from the viewer) is from the city of Luxembourg. Luxembourg was occupied by German forces from the beginning of the First World War in August of 1914, to the end of the war, in November 1918. American Expeditionary Forces liberated this small country.

Only the front hull of the ship is visible, with green, white, and black dazzle camouflage painted on it. There are large sections missing from the hull, which the workers are in the process of replacing. The workers are standing on three levels of scaffolding. A small boat with a black and white smoke stack is floating next to the workers. In the background there is a white building and an American flag is seen flying from the deck of another ship. Signed at bottom right by the artist, "W.J. Aylward, A.E.F. '19."

The building in the background has less extensive damage, but makeshift stairs have been built to enter the building at its first and second floors.

The focal point of the sketch are the arches, Jouy-aux-Arches, that run across the street. There are also houses on either side of the street. The sketch is done on thin greenish paper, which is attached to slightly thicker card of the same size. This mount is then taped to a large piece of thick cardboard at each of its corners. There are two labels attached to the large cardboard mount. The first reads: "BRIEULLES-SUR-MEUSE/BY E. PIEXOTTO/TRANSFERRED FROM THE WAR DEPARTMENT/2972." The second label is typed and reads "Dun and Brieulles were both the/scenes of fierce fighting in the/Argonne Campaign."

The museum's catalogue card for this drawing reads, "The road through Merviller is on the slope of a hill and is exposed to German observation. But by the use overhead camouflage screening, one strip of which is here shown, the traffic along this road is entirely concealed."
