There was more than one pewterer named William Scott working in The Grassmarket and West Bow areas of Edinburgh at this time. Could be William Scott (III), 1794-1836, or his son William Scott (IV), working 1830-1849. Robert Wright was Dean of Guild, 1825-1827.

Rim exterior is stamped "GILL" on front with four additional marks, including "24, an "A" in heart, and a double-headed eagle in oval. Handle is loose.

Troyes type shouldered flagon or pichet with a wide, almost flat, single-reeded base, and a five-lobed shell or anthemion thumb piece with upturned wedge extension burnt to the flat-top tapered lid, which is stamped "I H L" in raised serif letters; no spout. One pair of incised lines around the slightly flared rim and at bottom of body just above base. Plain strap handle with square lower terminal. Top of lid struck with circle at center and partial touchmark to side of a crowned oval containing a lion passant, facing left, against a tree, the raised serif letters "P L" at upper left and right.

Bottom inside with large, raised serif letters "S D". Bottom outside struck with two small curvilinear touchmarks, one at center has "I L / C" around a crowned hammer and the other has "S G / C / E L".
