This vertical spindle gear cutter was originally used in the Case Brothers Paper Mill in Manchester, Connecticut, which was a division of the larger Boise Cascade Corporation.
In 1971, the Case Brothers Mill was decommissioned, with production moving to the company’s plant in Brattleboro, Vermont. Much of the machinery was discarded, but this gear cutter was gifted to the Smithsonian.
In 1861, Alfred Wells Case and Albert Willard Case founded the Case Brothers Paper Mill in South Manchester, CT. The company originally washed cotton waste for the manufacture of guncotton for the use of Union troops during the Civil War. When the war ended, the brothers began papermaking. A machine shop was built in 1888 to build Case-designed paper-making machinery. In 1967, the business was sold to Boise Cascade, an international forest products company.
