Southern Appalachian Crafts Overshot Coverlet; ca. 1970. This is a 4-shaft overshot coverlet, woven in red, black and white. Warp z twist, 2 ply white cellulosic, ground weft z twist single(?) of white cellulosic, pattern weft s-twist, 2 ply (?) of red and back wool (?) The pattern is a "sunrise" or "blooming leaf" figure between tables or squares (see pp 68, 179, 181 in the The shuttle-craft Book by Atwater for a similar coverlet) sunrise patterns Repeat unit is 10 1/4 x 9 1/4. The coverlet is composed of two 39.5 wide lengths which are machine stitched together then hand overcast.
Multi-colored overshot coverlet fragment, done in a plain weave with fringe and selvage. The white yarns in the warp are 3 ply z twist cotton, and the green, blue and red in the weft are wool. In the fringe, white 2 ply z twist cotton in the warp and white z twist single cotton in the weft. The yarn count is 22 x30. Total repeat of the pattern is 14.50 by 3 7/8. A zig-zag pattern runs along fringe and hem edges. This may have been a border. The fringe is hand woven, and is attached to the selvage with a white 2 ply z twist cotton thread.
Sample of fringed; 6-harness, rib weave formed by heavy weft of cotton noils which are intirely covered by the fine warp of mercerized cotton threads. Colors: Tan, blue and rose. Mrs. Mary M. Atwater would label it Swedish weave.

Overshot woven coverlet with block pattern. Pattern consists of a simple repeat of large and small blocks Unusual self fringe.Warp white cotton 2 ply S-twist, weft blue woool, 2 ply S-twist. Self fringe along 3 sides in white cotton. Along edges a double hand worked leno pattern is worked. It is a continuation of the warp at he bottom, but applied to both side edges.
Fragment of a 4 harness, overshot weave made of handspun coarse cotton warp, 22 ends per inch and weft of the same; with wool weft yarns colored light and dark brown with vegetable dyes, the light shade no doubt, being extract of boiled butternut shucks, forming the overshot block pattern, made up of 2-inch squares, alternating a 16-block square with a square of 38 small rectangles.
