There are people along the river bank; two of them appear to be fishing. In the background is a large castle that rises above the town; this is the Château de Saumur. An original label on the drawing read, "A view of the city showing the chateau. The city is interesting as the location of an important American artillery school." On the reverse of the paper is a small sketch of an artillery gun.

In the center of the white band is machine-sewn a black number "1" applique. White canvas hoist with no grommets. The inscription on the hoist reads "3rd Div 1st Brg 19 Army Corps Prior to 1863." The flag is machine-stitched with flat-felled seams using white threads.

A catalog card indicates that an original label on the drawing read: "Drawing made the day before the French troops entered the city. The flags at the windows and the abandoned cannons are placed for this event [liberation of the city]. The nearer of the large buildings was a Soldatenheim [soldier's home] and the farther, the officers' club."

Rectangular wool bunting flag. White field with a large blue six-point star in the center of the flag. Reinforcement squares of fabric on both hoist corners. White cotton hoist (with hand-stitched overcast stitch) with a metal grommet at each end. Flat-felled seams are machine-stitched. Two rows of stitching on the star; the second row of stitching is done by hand. There are various points of hand-basting. Cotton thread. Inscription on hoist reads "8TH ARMY/CORPS 3RD DIVISION"/
Charcoal sketch on white paper. Sketch shows the ruins of a village on a hill. Smith calls this village "No Man's Land." There are two soldiers at the top of the hill. The street has multiple holes from shell fire. The buildings have all been destroyed and are now without roofs and walls. Telephone pole at left.

They're positioned directly in front of a big white tent. There is a large tree on the righthand side, and another tent visible in background on a hilltop.

Pencil and watercolor sketch on white paper, mounted on thick paper. The sketch shows a telephone station trench-like structure in the foreground. There is an American soldier standing right outside of the station. Behind them, there are barbed wire fences, and more American soldiers (one of which is one a horse). In the distant background, destroyed structures and fields are visible. Two barrage balloons and two clouds of smoke are floating in the sky above the scene.
Watercolor and pastel on white paper of two six-ton Renault FT-17 tanks (also called "light tanks") climbing a hill. The Renault FT-17 is a two-man tank with the driver seated in front and the gunner standing behind him in the turret. The turret is fully rotating and is mounted with a machine gun. The tank's motor compartment is in back. The tank has two tracked drive wheels which allow it to maneuver over rough terrain and a rear tail to help maintain balance when crossing trenches. The Renault is a French tank and is generally considered to be the world's first modern tank.
