Ink wash and charcoal sketch on paper. The work depicts the Château de Sedan, a castle in Sedan, France, while it was used as a German military hospital during World War I. The foreground of the drawing is dominated by a large cross in a circle which appears to have been cut in to the grass on the ground. The castle is shown behind the cross, with a flag, likely a hospital flag, flying on one of its peaked roofs.

General History
The forage cap was introduced just in time to become the signature headgear of the Civil War soldier. This model was the most popular worn by the Union army, officers and enlisted men alike. It was adopted as standard army headgear. The visor can be flat or sloping. Because of its popularity, the cap was made in several styles.

The perspective is from a northeast position looking southwest toward two sets of hospital buildings on opposite sides of the river. The hospital complex on the right is composed of tents and barracks set up in orderly rows in front of a grove of trees. Several town buildings are in the center of the work including a tower which might be the steeple of a church.

White cotton open-sleeve hoist is machine-stitched and has no grommets. Flag seams are machine-stitched and flat-felled; they are done with black, natural, red, and tan cotton thread. Inscription on hoist reads "3rd Brg. 2nd Div. 12 th Army Corps".
Notes from condition survey: Pole sleeve stitched closed at one end. Double thickness of red border fabric basted on with red and black fabric. Illegible ink numbers near one end of the hoist.
