Affirmative action is the "activity and/or policy that helps groups affected by discrimination obtain equal access to opportunities, especially in employment and education" Several students felt they were denied admission to the University of Michigan based on their race. The Michigan Constitution was amended to prohibit race as a part of the admissions process. In 1970, 4 people were killed in an armed takeover of a court room in Marin County, California. The guns used in the takeover were registered to Angela Davis, a political activist and communist. In 1972 she was acquited of all charges.
