This Black Chantilly lace lappet or scarf is a sample of early Victorian bobbin lace from about 1870. It is of good quality, but fragile. The fine black silk threads are disintegrating. The ends are of higher quality than the center section.
Cover or curtain with Reticella needle lace insertion and an edging that looks like Genoese Rose bobbin lace. The hanging is from the 17th or possibly the 19th century, and is decorated on three sides
This lace pattern is printed on light brown thin cardboard. It is titled Jewel Insertion and copyrighted 1904. All rights reserved. Rows of dots with tiny numbers 1-239 indicate the order of making the lace. The corresponding instructions are printed in The American Lace Maker, Volume 1, pages 13-16, as Lesson No. 16. The pattern has not been used.
