A catalog card indicates that an original label on the drawing read: "Drawing made the day before the French troops entered the city. The flags at the windows and the abandoned cannons are placed for this event [liberation of the city]. The nearer of the large buildings was a Soldatenheim [soldier's home] and the farther, the officers' club."

A wounded American soldier reads while sitting in a chair, with one leg raised and resting on a bench. Crutches lean against the bench. There are two labels on the cardboard under the sketch. The first is printed and reads: "GERMAN DUGOUTS, MONTSEC/BY E. PEIXOTTO/TRANSFERRED FROM THE WAR DEPARTMENT/2989". The second is typed and reads: "This was the dugout of the commanding officer. The walls were covered with burlap and the furniture was carefully made of twisted boughs. The wouded [sic] officer belonged to the 1st Division, which took Montsec."

Mixed media sketch on paper. This drawing shows a dressing station for the wounded that is close to the fighting of World War I. Two soldiers are in the doorway of a dugout whose entrance is littered with stretchers and other equipment. In the background, above the dugout, are two more soldiers and an ambulance. An inscription on the drawing indicates that this dressing station was operated by the Red Cross and was constantly under shell fire.
