Single-reeded circular dish with deep flat well scored once near booge; no foot ring. Large, shaped touchmark of Stephen Barnes, consisting of his name in reserves above and below a circle containing stars over a spreadwing eagle, head facing right and overlapping wing, struck twice on underside of well; both partial.
Maker is Stephen Barnes; little is known about him other than that he is believed to have worked in Middletown, CT, circa 1798-1810.
Sawtooth trammel consisting of a hanging rod suspended from a swivel hook on large ring that has a curved handle looped through its bottom end and an adjustable, sawtooth extension with eight ratchets that ends in a flat-scroll hook chased with a feather or chevron pattern and a spear-pointed finial. No marks.
Wrought iron shelf hook or hanger. Flattened ‘L’ shape, tapered to a blunt point. End appears to be broken off(?). Hole for accompanying wrought iron nail to be inserted, to hold shelf (a plank of wood) to wall, with three other similar hooks/hangers. No mark. Some rust.
Small pot on three, triangular feet with a flared lip, bulbous body and forged bail handle looped around semicircular lugs or ears. Hollow cast with two fillets around body; two vertical seams, no gate mark. No other marks.
Spider or circular skillet on three, tall, incurved and splayed legs, rectangular in section, that are double-riveted to sides. Skillet is forged from a single piece of iron with flared sides, flat bottom and an integral, long, tapered handle, rectangular in section, that is bent at an angle above rim and ends in a hanging hook. Row of seven incuse dots stamped on bottom of handle at shoulders. No additional marks.
Stationary broiler or gridiron with a grill of six parallel bars held between two brackets and a straight, angled handle with rattail loop and Y-split end attached to rear bracket. All parts tenoned and peened. No marks. Tips backward and rests on handle.
Small Toulouse type bulbous or bellied flagon or pichet with tapered galleried rim and pedestal base; no spout. Double-acorn thumb piece with upturned wedge extension burnt to the flat-top tapered lid, which has an applied disk at center stamped with a fleur-de-lis above the incuse serif letters "I B M". Lid incised with three wide lines on top and side; rim and base have two thin lines; and top of neck and base have one thin line. Strap handle with stepped thumbrest and square lower terminal; no strut. Bottom underside struck once with partial touchmark that has interlocking "C"s at center.
Broad-rimmed circular plate with shallow, flat well engraved with a depiction of St. Bartholomew, with rayed halo, holding a knife or small axe in his left hand and walking to the left on a mound with flowers, labeled "SPARTAEOME" at upper left; a continuous, undulating vine or stem of flowers fills rim. Rim beaded on underside; no foot ring. Underside has one incised circle around a partial, small, shield-shaped mark stamped at center with raised "Z / S" on one side and illegible motif on the other; two hearts off to one side. Small plugged hole at top of rim. Numerous cracks along inner edge of rim at booge. One of two engraved plates depicting Sts. Peter and Bartholomew, DL*311692A-B.
Broken andiron with a circular disk finial on a straight upright that is cylindrical at top, faceted at bottom and bent at a right angle to become the billet bar. Square, arched legs with tab feet are forge-welded to upright. Secondary square leg is peened at top of billet bar. No marks.
Guernsey measure or flagon with double-acorn thumb piece; half pint size. Wedge extension is burnt to the plain, pointed and pouted lid. Plain body with slightly flared rim and wide, single-incised, flared base. Strap handle with pointed terminal; oval strut. Elaborate touchmark on outside of lid "N\s. L C.t" and "GUERNESEY" in shaped surrounds flanked by roses; "M.B:H. / S" stamped below in incuse serif letters, erased. Verification marks for Guernsey of a five-petaled rose and a fleur-de-lis are stamped on opposite sides of rim exterior.
Handleless, raised tapered cylindrical cup with slightly flared rim and flat bottom; engraved with a floral border interrupted by an oval reserve containing the monogram "JR" in conjoined script. Bottom underside struck twice with "AvV" in raised script letters in a rectangle, flanking the centerpoint.
Plain, raised hemispherical bowl on a flared or trumpet-shape pedestal atop a square base with applied sides. Applied beading at rim and at top and bottom of pedestal. One side of base is struck "C.Wiltberger" in raised roman letters in a conforming surround. Square piece of wood inserted into bottom of base is adhered with a large cloth label printed "SHIPP. / ACC." and a smaller paper label inscribed "345".
Maker is Christian Wiltberger (1766-1851) of Philadelphia, PA; working by 1793 (when partnership with Samuel Alexander dissolved) until 1817.
