Souvenir matchsafe commemorating the World's Columbian Exposition in the shape of a flattened egg broken at its tip with strike plate at bottom. Repousse chased case with side-hinged lid has "COLUMBUS' / EGG" on one side (hinge at right) above a view of the Nina under the date "1492"; the other side has "SOUVENIR / 1893" on lid and an empty, asymmetrical, beaded C-scroll reserve below. Collar outside is struck above Nina "STERLING" in incuse sans serif letters. No other marks.

Suspended from a split-pin spring hooked through the small twisted loop at center of the wire bail handle. Spring struck on one arm "S. KIRK & SON" and "11 OZ", both in raised serif letters in rectangles.
Carved fretwork, folding wall shelf consisting of a collapsible, serpentine-front shelf and L-shaped bracket, both with coil or spiral wire hinges pinned into a sawn back panel featuring a symmetrical, openwork design of tripartite leaves on circular looped and S-curved branches. Stamped "10" on back next to penciled numbers.
