James Edward Hanger (1843-1919), the first amputee of the Civil War, was a young Confederate soldier who lost a leg at the Battle of Philippi on June 3, 1861. Returning home to his family, Hanger created a wooden leg for himself. That was the genesis of a business that is still going strong. This pair of prosthetic legs was manufactured by J. E. Hanger in Atlanta, in the 1950s, and worn by the donor, Sherry G. Lehr, as a young child.
