Human lung encased in plastic donated by James D. Hardy (1918-2003), professor of surgery at University of Mississippi Medical School. Dr. Hardy performed the first human lung transplant, in 1963. He also attempted the first modern heart transplant when he transplanted the heart of a chimpanzee into Boyd Rush, a comatose and dying patient, on January 24, 1964.
