This is either a sample coverlet, or a coverlet meant for a child's bed. It was woven in dark and light blue. There is no fringe. The centerfield contains a carpet medallion design with birds in flight. the border contains flowers and chains along with birds in a tree. There is a woven inscription on the coverlet which reads, ""Margaret Christie, July 17, 1836." The elements in this design are balanced side to side but the entire pattern is not. The center star is not in the center. There is a border of diamonds end to end around three sides slides. The weaver of this coverlet used the signature, "I. Christie." The I in this case stands for James or John J. Margaret was the daughter of the weaver, and it is therefore lilkely that this coverlet was woven for his daughter when she was just a child.
